故事发生在1955年的法国南特，图片彼时那里正在进行一场轰轰烈烈的工人罢工运动，图片而钢铁工人弗朗西斯（理查·贝里 Richard Berry 饰）就是参与其中的一员。弗朗西斯租下了寡妇玛格特（达尼尔·达黎欧 Danielle Darrieux 饰）手里的一间房子，玛格特虽然是资产阶级，但是却对工人阶级充满了同情，时长向他们伸出援手。弗朗西斯有一个相恋多年的女友瓦雷特（Fabienne Guyon 饰），虽然瓦雷特腹中已经怀上了他的孩子，但这个冷漠残酷的男人还是选择抛弃了她，转而将注意力投向了一个名叫艾迪斯（多米尼克·桑达 Dominique Sanda）的女人。艾迪斯嫁给了一个富有的商人，可婚后的生活却令她苦不堪言，为了排遣内心的愤懑，艾迪斯偷偷从事着妓女的职业。
