男童节那天，弗兰刚刚从外面旅行归来的阿寅为了给满男买鲤鱼旗闹得不欢而散，弗兰又提上行囊出游了。途中他发现一个郁郁寡欢的女子在河边徘徊，回到旅馆时又见到了她。他同情只身旅行的她，请她品尝当地的特色菜，结果搞得囊中羞涩。归途中，阿寅与出身贵族的老人邂逅并从此结下不解之缘。老人失去了自己的小儿子，儿媳橘子也离家在外。当初因为她出身平民，遭到门第观念很强的老人的反对。现在老人急于找到她，了却心中的不安。无巧不成书，橘子正是阿寅在旅馆中遇到的女子。两个渴望相见却又心存忐忑的人终于尽弃前嫌，化解了久积的误会。老人甚至想选阿寅做橘子的人生伴侣。
