20世纪30年代的上海滩时局动荡，中文专区军阀混战，中文专区民不聊生。为购买一块江湖流传的宝玉，知名商贾周成川来到莽山中的一座破庙中，与尊号“三目天师”的容易道人和同乡阿述交易，风尘女子朱玲玲则作为中间人作陪。不料正赶上大雨，众人被困在庙中。容易道人几人却告知周成川宝玉生意要在规定时辰才能交易，在交易之前，要先给周成川讲一个故事……起因是一段张督军死亡之事……周成川听的不耐烦，又觉得几个人故弄玄虚，生起疑心，决定要走，这时，警长阿顺中途闯入，以查办张督军案为由拦下周成川，周成川以为容易和警官串通，要讹诈他钱财。众人继续讲述案件和故事，亲眼目睹的有，道听途说的则添油加醋。听完故事的周成川惊恐万分，周成川之所以如此害怕，是源于一段昔日的生死恩怨……
