新世纪之初不久某年的夏天，黄网为了与父亲生活，黄网逢泽步来到了距东京2小时火车车程的小镇。步是不去上学的中学生。原因不明。似乎和什么样的理由都沾一点边，但又不是那种理由。觉得无论走到哪、无论做什么都无聊的步，来和父亲度过一个夏天，是因为母亲出的主意。双亲在他还小的时候离婚了，他和父亲也4年没有见面了。步并非积极地响应母亲的提案。对毫无朝气的步，妈妈提出要以买个山地自行车为交换条件，让他去和父亲见面。既然话都这么说了，步也不得不打起点精神。这样步终于到了那个小镇。母亲说步小时曾来过一次，但他一点印象也没有。田菜——在围绕着广阔的水田的山的斜面的，似乎被农家钉子一样点缀着的小盆地。在看见这景象的瞬间，步就后悔来到这里了。因为无论从什么角度怎么看都是不变的田舍，实在是寒酸得要死。然而，这么想可就大错特错了....
