2009年，不速世界突发异状，不速本意长眠地下的死者突然复生，自此丧尸肆虐横行，死者众多。为了保护自身安全，人类成立志愿军向丧尸宣战。而相关药物的开发则宣告这场灾难的结束。丧尸从此被称作“部分死亡综合症患者”，通过药物注射他们得以找回作为人的记忆和情感，并慢慢回归社会。青年吉伦·沃克（卢克·纽伯里 Luke Newberry 饰）曾是丧尸中的一员，他满怀期待与父母家人见面，然而家乡充满了不安气氛。虽然志愿军早已解散，但他所在的诺顿村民风彪悍，思想保守，坚决反对任何回归者，而吉伦最疼爱的妹妹洁迈玛（哈丽特·肯斯 Harriet Cains 饰）正是当地志愿军的一员。漫漫回家路，期间所承受的痛苦远甚于每日的药物注射和非人时期的残酷回忆。吉伦开始了另一种形式的战斗……
