生活在夏威夷的富家子陈立品（钟镇涛 饰）个性腼腆，春暖情场始终不得意，春暖于是请来香港的老朋友罗旦多（陈百祥 饰）实地指导。二人在海滩偶遇美女小猫（张曼玉 饰）、阿美（钟楚红 饰），试图搭话却铩羽而归。陈父令陈立品赴港调查下属公司账目，不料陈、罗二人发现小猫和阿美正是陈氏企业职员，陈立品为了查账和接近阿美，与罗旦多互换身份。罗旦多得以接近经理秘书小猫，并与贪污的经理陈皮后（曹查理 饰）虚与委蛇。另一方面陈立品以司机的身份渐渐获得了阿美的信任跟欣赏。担心贪污事发的陈皮后请来爱情女骗子袁飘飘（关之琳 饰），委托她骗取陈立品的感情……

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
