刘嘉玲与毛舜筠均任职重案组，午夜刘乃新扎高级督察，午夜办事满有冲动，而毛则对警队失去信心，她们的线人罗美薇为贪线人费，无意中发现一宗黑枪交易，但罗怕入旋涡，不愿冒险探料，唯刘苦苦相迫。罗向上司协议，但他反叫罗以身作饵引黑帮主脑出现，罗大骂二人视人命如草芥。刘感极难受，毛知罗生命危险，决心保护，但最后罗也被杀，而死前把线索交予毛，毛、刘和上司追查下与黑帮主脑碰面，混乱中上司被挟持，亦首次尝试到死亡边缘的滋味。最后，毛、刘合力救回上司，并找回失枪，从此以后，毛、刘皆对人生、事业有积极的改变。
